E.8Manage comparatives, errors, restatements and methodology changes

Working Draft version 1.1

Purpose and scope

This unit covers the capability to determine and document the treatment of prior-period sustainability information when errors, definition or methodology changes, boundary changes, acquisitions or disposals, improved data, estimates or target recalculations affect comparability. It includes restatement decisions, comparative bridges, disclosure of reasons and effects, approval, cross-channel consistency and retention of prior versions.

Applied competency statement
Can determine, document and control comparatives, errors, restatements and methodology changes so that period-on-period information remains transparent, supportable and consistently communicated.
Boundary and escalation
This unit governs sustainability reporting comparatives and does not determine financial-statement accounting treatment, legal correction duties, market announcements or specialist target or scientific recalculation rules. Those matters require qualified finance, accounting, legal, methodology or subject-matter owners. G.11 addresses published correction and post-publication control.
Key quality risks
Correcting only the current period while leaving the comparative misleading; restating favourable metrics but not adverse ones; confusing an error, estimate update, methodology change and boundary change; silently replacing prior values on a website; recalculating without retained source evidence; inconsistent treatment across reports and ratings submissions; target or base-year recalculations not reconciled to published performance; and excessive restatement that creates false comparability.
