C.6Determine financial materiality

Working Draft version 1.1

Purpose and scope

This unit covers the capability to identify, assess and document sustainability-related risks and opportunities that could affect the organisation's financial position, performance, cash flows, access to finance, cost of capital, resilience or broader enterprise prospects over relevant time horizons, according to the applicable reporting basis. It includes transmission pathways, likelihood, magnitude, uncertainty, current and anticipated effects and integration with finance and risk processes.

Applied competency statement
Can identify, assess and document sustainability-related risks and opportunities using the financial-materiality criteria required by the reporting basis, including transmission pathways, time horizons, likelihood, magnitude, uncertainty and finance or risk evidence.
Boundary and escalation
This unit determines financial materiality for sustainability reporting and does not provide investment advice, valuation, credit analysis, actuarial modelling, accounting conclusions or securities-law opinions. Complex cash-flow, valuation, scenario, accounting and financial-effect analysis requires qualified finance, risk, accounting, actuarial, valuation, legal or subject-matter specialists.
Key quality risks
Treating every impact as financially material without a supported pathway; restricting analysis to existing enterprise-risk registers or current financial-statement effects; using reputation as a generic unexplained pathway; ignoring longer time horizons, dependencies, opportunities or low-likelihood high-magnitude matters; double counting the same financial effect; overstating precision; and allowing unavailable valuation data to eliminate a potentially material matter.
